amy's girlA Story of Inspiration by Alston & Barzach | $17.95 US | $20.95 CAN

Amy’s Girl creates the context for understanding hope in the face of life-threatening challenges.

Using wistful images and truthful words, what can be expected is clearly defined. Amy’s Girl defeats the bogeyman for young and old alike. It encourages and it highlights the importance of a positive attitude.

It proposes keeping faith when it feels like you are on a raft in the middle of a turbulent ocean with huge waves crashing over your head, again and again (often when people are faced with tragedy or difficult circumstances, it feels just like this.)

“I am Amy’s girl.  Yes, I am the ‘girl in the wheelchair".  With these words we begin the wonderful journey from the other side of the looking glass.

We hear a poignant fictional story of the young girl who along with a little boy named Jonathan who would have needed a wheelchair if he’d had a chance to grow up inspired the start of Boundless Playgrounds, which is now the first national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping communities throughout America create playgrounds where everyone can play and celebrate life together. Children like the ‘girl in the wheelchair’ and ultimately every child, with and without disabilities.

The true story of Amy Jaffe Barzach and her family inspired this fictional visit into the world of ‘Amy’s girl’.  The nonfiction book, Accidental Courage, Boundless Dreams, co-authored by Amy and Sandy Greenberg and published in 2002; is the extraordinary book full of truths about Amy’s own family’s tortuous journey changing life’s tragedies and stumbling blocks into stepping-stones.

It includes the story of Amy being at the playground with her then healthy son Jonathan and three year old Daniel, and seeing a little girl in a wheelchair sadly watching everyone else play on a playground she couldn’t play on. That little girl, ‘Amy’s girl’ inspired Amy to say, ‘Shouldn’t playgrounds be for everyone?”.
